Hotel Eldhestar is a cosy countryside hotel with a luxurious atmosphere. It features 37 spacious rooms, a warm, light-filled restaurant and traditional hot tubs to relax in at the end of the day. The hotel’s interior is inspired by the colours and materials found in Icelandic nature, genuine craftsmanship and age-old traditions. It was built in accordance with ecological guidelines and is the first lodging in Iceland to be awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
Our hotel is situated in the heart of Iceland’s south-western countryside on Road Nr.1, about a 30 minutes’ drive from Reykjavik. This unique location between volcanic mountains, rivers and the ocean allows our guests to experience diverse nature and gorgeous scenery. The area around the volcano Hengill with its beautiful valleys and hot springs inspired our name, but Eldhestar means Volcano Horses.

Environmental affairs have always been close to the heart of Eldhestar’s spokespersons. In 2002, for example, Hótel Eldhestar was the first hotel and guesthouse in Iceland to fulfil the requirements for the Nordic Swan voluntary eco-licensing system. Clearly, opportunities for sound environmental measures are legion. So, when Hey Iceland, in collaboration with Orkusetur (The Energy Agency) and other parties, launched the collaborative project “Recharge in the Barnyard”, Eldhestar immediately jumped aboard. Transport serves many key functions in the tourism industry. It is therefore only natural to focus on how we can promote making trips between destinations more environmentally sound. Widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EV) in the country is an important step toward reducing greenhouse gases. To speed up the adoption of EV, it is important to expedite the expansion of services for guests wanting to use electric vehicles in their travels around the country. By participating in this project, we want to support the increased use of electric vehicles everywhere in Iceland.
Our rooms
Hotel Eldhestar features 37 comfortable rooms with private facilities, some of them fully accessible. Our rooms have double or twin beds and some of them are available as triple rooms. Additionally, we have a spacious room for the whole family, accommodating 5 people. All rooms are outfitted with the luxurious Hästens beds, unrivaled sleep comfort handcrafted from sustainable, natural materials, such as genuine hypoallergenic horsehair, cotton, wool, flax, and Swedish pinewood. Each room has a door to the garden, allowing you to step outside and observe the northern lights, weather and season permitting.

Hotel Eldhestar was built with ecological technology and is the first lodging in Iceland to receive the Nordic Swan. The Swan certification ensures the highest standards in terms of quality, environment, and health. Dining at Hotel Eldhestar
Our charming restaurant can seat up to 120 people. The food we serve is inspired by traditional Icelandic cuisine and revolves around typical Icelandic ingredients. Wherever possible, we source our food locally and much of our produce is grown in the town of Hveragerði, less than 2 km from our farm Vellir. Meat and fish are supplied by farmers and fishermen in our area.
