About us
Hotel Eldhestar is a cosy countryside hotel with a luxurious atmosphere. It features 37 spacious rooms, a warm, light-filled restaurant and traditional hot tubs to relax in at the end of the day. The hotel’s interior is inspired by the colours and materials found in Icelandic nature, genuine craftsmanship and age-old traditions. It was built in accordance with ecological guidelines and is the first lodging in Iceland to be awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
Our hotel is situated in the heart of Iceland’s south-western countryside on Road Nr.1, about a 30 minutes’ drive from Reykjavik. This unique location between volcanic mountains, rivers and the ocean allows our guests to experience diverse nature and gorgeous scenery. The area around the volcano Hengill with its beautiful valleys and hot springs inspired our name, but Eldhestar means Volcano Horses.

Eco-friendly
Hotel Eldhestar was the first lodging in Iceland to receive the Nordic ecolabel the Nordic Swan. We follow the guidelines of the Swan for both the building process as well as the daily operations at our hotel.
Inspired
We drew inspiration from the colours and materials in Icelandic nature as well as from the culture. Genuine craftsmanship and old tradition inspire the interior in a house built with ecological technology.
Dedicated
We have dedicated our hotel to the Icelandic horse – our most useful servant for centuries. Our walls feature old photos and texts that remind us of the importance of the horse through the ages.
Dining at Hotel Eldhestar
Our charming restaurant can seat up to 120 people. The food we serve is inspired by traditional Icelandic cuisine and revolves around typical Icelandic ingredients. Wherever possible, we source our food locally and much of our produce is grown in the town of Hveragerði, less than 2 km from our farm Vellir. Meat and fish are supplied by farmers and fishermen in our area.

Eldhestar Guesthouse
In addition to Hótel Eldhestar, we also offer accommodation in our small and cosy guesthouse, located next to the hotel. The guesthouse offers a comfortable living room, shared bathroom facilities, tea kettle that can also be used to make instant coffee, and small refrigerator, however, we do not offer cooking facilities. Guests that stay at the guesthouse are welcome to use all facilities and services of Hotel Eldhestar, including the hot tub and restaurant.
Twin room
Guesthouse Eldhestar offers private twin rooms featuring two single beds. Each room has washbasins and soap. Bed linens, towels, Wi-Fi and parking are included free of charge.
Triple room
Guesthouse Eldhestar offers triple rooms, featuring three single beds. All rooms have washbasins and soap. Bed linens, towels, Wi-Fi and parking are included free of charge.
Quad room
Guesthouse Eldhestar has quad rooms on offer. These rooms are perfect for families or small groups travelling together. Each room features a washbasin, soap, bed linens, towels, free Wi-Fi and free parking.
Our rooms
Hotel Eldhestar features 37 comfortable rooms with private facilities, some of them fully accessible. Our rooms have double or twin beds and some of them are available as triple rooms. Additionally, we have a spacious room for the whole family, accommodating 5 people. All rooms are outfitted with the luxurious Hästens beds, unrivalled sleep comfort handcrafted from sustainable, natural materials, such as genuine hypoallergenic horsehair, cotton, wool, flax and Swedish pinewood. Each room has a door to the garden, allowing you to step outside and observe the northern lights, weather and season permitting.

Whether you are on a romantic trip with your partner or travelling by yourself, with the whole family or in a group of friends, our cosy little hotel in stunning nature is the ideal home base for your activities in South Iceland. The most popular highlights are all easily within driving distance and the exciting geothermal area at our doorstep offers plenty of activity options for everyone. We are happy to help you plan your outings or help you celebrate your family functions, dinner events and other milestones.
Ecological and sustainable
Hotel Eldhestar was built with ecological technology and is the first lodging in Iceland to receive the Nordic Swan. The Swan certification ensures the highest standards in terms of quality, environment and health. Among other regulations, certified operations are subject to certain guidelines regarding energy and water consumption, waste management and use of chemicals. Here at Eldhestar, we are committed to those standards and thrive for continuous improvement and re-evaluation of our practices.
Meetings and conferences
Take your group out of town to experience a unique meeting venue close to nature. We offer excellent facilities for meetings, seminars and small conferences in our new, bright conference room. The room has a seating capacity of about 30 people with table set-up and accommodates up to 65 people in theatre set-up. The modern equipment includes projector, flip chart, screen, wireless internet connection, computer etc.
Break up the day with delicious local food, home-made cakes, a relaxing bath in the hot tub or even a short riding tour. At the end of a busy day the hotel’s comfortable rooms with complimentary internet access are ideal to work or relax.
